1- Parlons-SIDA
1. Fr Raymond Nkongolo SJ, parish priest, Paroisse Christ-Roi, Kisangani DR Congo
Parlons-SIDA – “Let’s talk AIDS”
Parlons-SIDA is a parish-based service at Christ the King Parish (35.000 catholic population) in Kisangani, DR Congo. Created in September 2002 in partnership with AJAN, it aims at talking about HIV/AIDS, informing, educating and preventing people against the HIV pandemic.
Although still a modest parish service, Parlons-SIDA faces the big pastoral challenge of dealing with HIV and AIDS in the Church of Kisangani. The Eastern Province is, indeed, the hardest hit by the pandemic in DR Congo, having an estimated prevalence rate of more than 6% in 2008. There are not enough state, civil society and Church organisations working in the field to solve this crucial problem.
Parlons-SIDA gives support and care to the infected and affected men, women, and orphaned children. This year, treatment and nutritional support are being provided for about 80 infected people, including eight children, and school fees for 150 orphans and vulnerable children. The demand is high but our means limited.
A team of five young lay, committed Christians, and Fr Jean-Pierre Luzolo SJ, the coordinator of the project, run a prevention programme at parish level and throughout the city in schools and other parishes, in nearby mines and on the local radio. Musical concerts, and drama, TV and radio shows, debates-forum, public campaigns related to HIV and AIDS are organised. The Parlons-SIDA team is often invited to sensitise young religious and seminarians in formation houses. To the beneficiaries, they provide psychosocial and spiritual counselling; they share the word of God to help them to appreciate and bear positively the cross of life.
At present my main concern is to see this useful work become part of the Jesuit apostolate in Kisangani. This is why we look to AJAN support to build a big youth centre to face the pastoral challenges of HIV/AIDS better in Kisangani and Eastern Province.
