Lea Toto (paediatric aids)
3. Alex Wainaina SJ: Lea Toto (paediatric aids)
For my regency, I worked as a medical doctor with an organisation that was started by the late Jesuit Fr. Angelo D’Agostino, called Children of God Relief Institute (COGRI). COGRI has 3 units: Nyumbani Children’s home, Lea Toto program, and Nyumbani Village located in a place called Kitui. Personally, I worked with Lea Toto, which is a home based care programme. It attempts to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS on the human society despite the presence of severe socio-economic problems. Lea Toto takes care of children who are HIV-positive but living with their families, either parents or guardians. Lea Toto has six clinics located in various low-income parts of Nairobi.

Initially, I worked as a medical director at the clinic located in the Kibera slum. Later, I became the Medical Director of the whole Lea Toto programme. This post gave me responsibilities as the leader of the medical team that comprises clinical officers, nurses, nutritionists and pharmacists. The main bulk of medical work in Lea Toto involves fighting the HIV virus directly using antiretroviral drugs (ARVs), treatment of opportunistic infections, monitoring clients’ adherence to ARVs, monitoring children’s health by physical examination (particularly by assessing increase in weight and height) and by laboratory investigations (for viral load levels, CD4 levels, etc), and identifying and managing malnutrition in children. We also advise parents and other caregivers on how to take care of their own health, particularly if a parent is also HIV-positive.
I have found fulfilment in the apostolate and I am happy to have been associated with a program that is positively touching the lives of otherwise very vulnerable members of our society. It is always consoling to see a small sick child regain their health and grow into adulthood. For me, it is a way of encountering God.
