4. Avelino Chico, SJ, Regent at Centre Espérance Loyola:
CEL is an apostolic institution set up by the West African Province of the Society of Jesus with the support of the African Jesuit AIDS Network (AJAN). The mission of CEL is to commit itself in the struggle against HIV/AIDS among the people - youth in particular- of Agoé-Nyivè (Lomé, Togo). To achieve its mission, CEL offers the following services:
· HIV prevention: providing formation, training and cultural activities (drama, ballet, music and poetry)
· Laboratory: Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT)
· Support and care of people living with HIV/AIDS and their families:
· Le Groupe de Parole
· L’Association Saint Louis de Gonzague
· Spiritual, psychosocial, medical, nutritional and educational assistance
· Advocacy: promotion of respect and dignity of those living with HIV/AIDS
· Documentation Centre: open to students for research
One of my duties: I am in charge of a group of young people (Groupe Artistique Rayons d’Espoir - GARE) and with them I hope to move around schools, parishes, markets and high density areas to sensitize the youth about the danger of HIV/AIDS pandemic. I am very pleased with what I do because I feel that I am also contributing to the aim which all of us have in mind: une societé sans SIDA. Moreover, I see the fruit of my work when young boys and girls with whom I work relate to each other without making sexual demands but regarding themselves as loving creatures of God.
