Bro Alain Ragueneau

5. Bro Alain Ragueneau, Little Brother of Gospel, Charles de Foucauld; HIV/AIDS counsellor since 2001 animator of HIV Support –Groups in Uzima Programme since 2004

Jesus sent his followers to preach the Gospel and take care of the sick, which is why St Joseph the Worker Parish started the Uzima (“life”) Programme at the service of the 130,000 inhabitants of Kangemi and particularly those living with HIV. Most of our partners are living far from their extended family; they often come after traumatising experiences with a strong feeling of loneliness. The support group is a place where they can meet, share, pray, learn dance like few days ago for the end of the year.

In Nairobi, the situation is now much better; the antiretrovirals are available for all those in need and prevalence has fallen to 7% or 8% (perhaps 10 000 people in Kangemi), but by definition an epidemic is any rate above 1%. We face challenges:
In a survey last month in our Parish, we observed that half of the adults had not been tested for HIV since two years, and for those above 45 years, two thirds had not been tested –I was one of them and did it just before conducting the survey! We are told that in Kenya one stable couple out of ten is discordant. There is still a lot to do in prevention, and not only among young people.

When I asked in a small Christian Community, “How many know if your partner has been tested?” only four out of twenty said they knew. “We live together but there are many things we do not share.” In the traditional village the tasks were well defined and accepted; grandmothers, uncles and elders were nearby to support. But in town, when I say to the young couples that they could take time to share together every week about (i) Work and finance, (ii) children, (iii) leisure and friends, (iv) extended families, (v) health and sexual life, (vi) spiritual life, they are often surprised and they take note.

With Bro Luc, PFE, we feel the need to serve the people living with HIV but more and more to educate and support the young families. We prepare ourselves to face another challenge: the many children who were born with the virus and are now reaching adolescence.
