Upendo
7. Allen Ottaro, Candidate to the AOR Province, youth, prevention (e.g. Upendo, EFL conference)

Upendo means love in Swahili and is the name of a centre run by St Joseph the Worker parish in Kangemi. The mission of Upendo unit is to support and educate street children, orphans, children neglected or at risk of abuse, most of whom have lost one or both parents to AIDS. The unit provides education, food and care. The Small Christian Communities of the parish identify the beneficiaries, who then undergo a one or two-year program that prepares them for primary school. Once they join primary school, Upendo supports them until completion. Some of them are also are supported through secondary school. Upendo unit is a home away from home for the children.

In December 2009, Frs Michael Czerny SJ and Raymond Nkongolo SJ, four regents (Augostine Ekeno, Avelino Chico, Bernard Omondi, and Martin Waweru) and a candidate (Allen Ottaro) represented AJAN at the 5th Pan-African Education for Life/Youth Alive Conference, in Nairobi. Both are HIV prevention strategies based on values and emphasizing abstinence and fidelity. Both empower people to take responsible decisions, through behaviour change, and are widely accepted in the Church. EFL workshops culminate in the setting up of Youth Alive clubs. Youth Alive's core goal is to help children, adolescents and young adults lead a healthy life free of HIV, so as to see out or fulfil their future dreams and ambitions through committing to healthy and proactive life styles. The program is active in more than 15 African countries and continues to spread.

At the conference, Fr Czerny spoke on The Mission of AIDS Ministry in Africa. AJAN House provided the conference delegates with books and DVDs on HIV prevention and care of those affected by AIDS. A Jesuit from Mauritius, Fr. Steves Babooram, also participated with an EFL delegation from his country. I am convinced that these ministries are a continuing response to the invitation from Our Lord Jesus, “I have come that you may have life and have it to its fullest.”
