This We Teach and Do
8. Marcel Uwineza, S.J. Workshops on This We Teach and Do with the Dioceses (working with Church structures), K-CHAT
On behalf of Catholic HIV-AIDS Taskforce in Kenya (K-CHAT) of the Bishops’ Conference, the AJAN House regents, Eric Simiyu SJ and Marcel Uwineza SJ, animated eight workshops to disseminate This We Teach and Do. They covered more than half of the 26 dioceses of Kenya and drew some 300 participants. Diocesan HIV-AIDS workers often do a remarkable job albeit with few resources and facing many challenges. I strongly realized how hard they are working, sometimes with meagre resources. They do not speak of HIV/AIDS from books. They live it. Diocesan HIV-AIDS workers need more formation: My major conclusion was the realization of their need for guidance in Church teaching on sexuality. When it was explained to them, participants generally felt the Church's stand to be realistic, moral, and reasonable even if people often refuse to listen. Untrained clergy and pastoral agents emerged as a challenge. A section of the participants pointed out that the policy ignored the formation and training of clergies on how to address issues of HIV and AIDS.
And here are some of Marcel’s concluding reflections:
HIV/AIDS brings complex questions that cannot be simplistically tackled. I came to the realization that the views I presented during the workshops are not the only ones available. Others also have something to offer, sometimes different, contradicting or complementing what I have taught.
In the workshops, I saw how much the Church is misunderstood, when it actually looks for the good of the human person; I have come to the realisation of the love of the Church as a mother.
With God’s grace, we can still help our infected and affected parents, brothers, sisters, children, friends and workmates to discover the God-given meaning and values of their lives despite the trauma and suffering they may be experiencing. This calls us to have a sincere and deep love for God, for our neighbours and love for ourselves. This will open up avenues to listen and learn from the different cases we encounter daily as we offer different kinds of care and services to those infected and affected, as well as to encourage those who work with us.
